Nagpur News: The world renowned institute, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), has been in the service for decades for innovative and effective solutions to environmental and natural resource problems.
The pride of Nagpur, the NEERI, the protector of the natural environment, has been found spreading very very toxic and life-threatening pollution itself. The NEERI is not only polluting the environment with the deadly stuff but playing the “poisonous” game with the lives of Nagpur citizens. Just Shocking. Shocking. And Shocking.
According to NEERI’s own scientist, Manish Rahate, “The NEERI is disposing of the unprocessed lethal chemicals, received by it for tests, into the water wastage pipelines, and, even dumping the highly toxic chemicals and their residues in the NEERI premises themselves. In simple chemistry, NEERI is indulging in chemical warfare,” Rahate claimed.
“The Wardha Road-based NEERI’s laboratory carries out various environment-related tests and researches. The NEERI laboratory receives different kinds of samples of chemicals from all parts of the country. But after the tests, the chemicals and their residues are kept in open without the process of killing the toxicity of the chemicals thus exposing them to blend with the environment . Some chemicals are disposed of by throwing them directly into waste water pipelines. The chemicals and their residues, dumped in the open, get pilfered into the lands. There are specific rules, regulations and guidelines laid down for getting rid of toxic chemicals and the residues. However, the world renowned NEERI cares a damn and this care a damn has been going on since past few years. And candidly speaking, NEERI lacks the required technology to properly process the chemicals and make them free of toxicity,” Rahate lamented with worry writ large on his face. Rahate has provided the photographs and video clippings to media in this connection.
“NEERI talks of pollution to Nag Nadi and Gosikhurd water by way of the sewage pipelines directly connected to the sources. But NEERI itself is responsible for Nag Nadi pollution in a colossal manner. NEERI chemicals cadmium, fluoride, nitrite, pesticides, fertilizers, acids had been and have been released into Nag Nadi. This river directs meets the Gosikhurd Projects thus polluting its water, too,” Rahate claimed.
However, NEERI authorities said, “We follow all the rules, regulations and guidelines while disposing of chemicals and their residues. About 15-20 liters of chemicals are released in water after their toxicity is reduced to minimal. Therefore, NEERI doesn’t pollute any river or water sources,” a press release issued by NEERI said.
“Even though Manish Rahate’s photographs show chemical garbage in NEERI premises, the garbage is dispsed of systematically. All the empty bottles of chemicals and the garbage are sent to the Butibori-based TSDF Project (Treatment, Storage and Disposable Facility) for destroying purpose. The bottles in NEERI premises lying are due to rains. But the bottles are totally harmless. The bottles contain no hazardous chemicals or other toxic stuff,” clarified the press release.
