Nagpur: In a heart-rending incident, a woman was crushed to death under a truck in front of her son in Kalamna police area on Sunday afternoon. The son was also injured in the mishap. The truck driver fled the spot fearing public violence.
Identified as Mayabai Shrawan Marsinghe (47), the deceased was a resident of Desaiganj, Wadsa, district Gadchiroli. Her son Swapnil (23), a resident of Durga Nagar, near Bhavani Mandir in Pardi, sustained serious injuries.
Mayabai was riding pillion on Swapnil’s Splendor motorcycle (MH-49/U-6665) around 3 pm on Sunday. In front of Baba Mobile Shop at Gulmohar Nagar on Bharatwada Road, a recklessly driven truck (MH-31/CB-6473) hit them from behind. The mother-son duo fell off the bike. Mayabai came under the wheels of the truck and was killed instantaneously in front of her son. The truck driver sped away fearing public wrath.
Kalamna police, after recording Swapnil’s statement, registered a case under Sections 279, 304(A), 337 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 134 and 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act, against the truck driver. Further investigations are underway.
