Nagpur: The fragrance of incense sticks, the chants of mantras, the echo of shankh and dhol, and a multitude of enthusiastic devotees — this is how Lord Ganesh was welcomed into thousands of homes and Mandal pandals across Nagpur. As the 10-day Ganeshotsav began on Saturday, September 7, the festive spirit was palpable on the streets, in homes, and at pandals.
Lord Ganesh, responded to devotees’ chant of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” and began His earthly sojourn on Ganesh Chaturthi. Lord Ganesh is believed to bestow good luck and remove the obstacles from the life of an individual that is why He is also called Vighnaharta by devotees.
The famous Chitar Oli area in Nagpur saw hundreds of people selecting idols to bring home, with every household being adorned in dazzling decorations. Setting up pandals is in full swing, featuring colorful displays and organizing cultural events that draw enthusiastic participation from the community.
Across Nagpur, vendors lined marketplaces and streets, offering devotees a wide variety of beautiful idols of Lord Ganesh. Many Mandals took their large idols in grand processions with dhol-tasha beats and band baja, as devotees swayed to the rhythm, embracing the festive atmosphere.
The festival is also synonymous with mouth-watering delicacies offered to Lord Ganesh. Modaks and Laddoos, the most popular offerings, are prepared with devotion, followed by other traditional sweets such as Puran Poli, which remains a key part of the festival’s culinary celebration.
As the festival culminates on September 17, known as Anant Chaturdashi, idols of Lord Ganesh will be immersed in water bodies. In recent years, eco-friendly immersions have gained prominence, with the Nagpur civic authorities and voluntary organizations promoting green immersions. Artificial water tanks have been set up in every locality, encouraging devotees to immerse the idols in these designated tanks instead of lakes and rivers.
