Nagpur: A 12-year old boy lost his life after drowning in a water filled pit excavated for building an underpass at Vairagade Wadi, Durga Mata Chowk, Dipti Signal in Kalamna area on Thursday.
The land where the 50 ft × 300 ft was dug belongs to the Railways. Around 6.30 pm, Prithvi Dhaniram Markhande (12), a resident of Dipti Signal locality, was playing with his friend near the pit. Suddenly, Prithvi slipped into it.
On seeing him drowning, his friend raised an alarm. Some residents gathered at the spot and made futile attempts to rescue him. Soon after the Fire and Emergency Services Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation received information about the incident, rescue teams from Kalamna, Sugat Nagar, Lakadgang, Ganjipeth and Sakkardara Fire Stations rushed to the spot.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer B P Chandankhede and Station Officer Anil Gole also visited the spot to supervise the operation. Staff from Kalamna Police Station also visited the spot during the search operation. Newly recruited Fireman Shrikrishna Narvate dived and retrieved the body from the 20 ft deep pond after 45 minutes. Cops sent the body to Mayo Hospital. After registering an accidental death case, Kalamna Police started an investigation.
