Nagpur: The JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron is spreading rapidly in Nagpur, with 20 out of 44 recent Covid-19 samples testing positive for the new sub-lineage. However, doctors reassured that despite JN.1’s increased transmissibility and ability to bypass some vaccine immunity, it is not causing serious illness in most cases, particularly among the vaccinated.
The results of the first batch of samples sent for genome sequencing last week arrived on Friday evening, revealing the concerning rise of JN.1. Interestingly, eight of the 18 individuals identified with the sub-variant have already recovered, and most others are isolated at home with mild symptoms like cough, cold, and throat infection.
The JN.1-positive list encompasses people of all ages and genders, from a 13-year-old boy to a 78-year-old man.
