Nagpur: The blissful atmosphere of the ongoing 10-day Ganeshotsav became even more joyous with the commencement of the 3-day Mahalaxmi Puja on Tuesday, September 10. The traditional and ancestral Gauri (Mahalaxmi) Puja has taken on a grander scale in recent years, with families adding a homely touch to the festivities, bringing together loved ones for the occasion.
As per legend, Mahalaxmi, accompanied by Her family, visits Her “Maheri” or “Maika” (Mother’s home) for three days each year. The household areas where Mahalaxmi Puja is conducted are artistically and elegantly adorned to match the divine ambiance. The idols of Mahalaxmi and Her family are dressed in special, traditional attire, adding to the sanctity of the celebration.
On the first day, Mahalaxmi and Her family are welcomed with traditional and religious rituals. The highlight of the second day is the grand ‘Mahaprasad,’ a feast featuring an array of dishes. The main Prasad includes a unique vegetable dish made from a mix of 16 different vegetables, ‘Ambil’ made of jowar flour, and the traditional sweet treat, Puran Poli. This elaborate feast is shared with families, friends, and neighbours, creating a sense of community and togetherness.
The third day of the celebration will feature the traditional “Haldi Kumkum” ceremony, a social gathering where women from different parts of society come together.
The festival holds deep mythological significance, with devotees believing that the arrival of Goddesses in pairs, such as Jyeshta-Kanishtha, Gauri-Laxmi, and Sakhi-Parvati, brings prosperity and well-being to the household.
