Nagpur: Due to continuous crop loss and deteriorating financial condition, three farmers have committed suicide in the Vidarbha in last 24 hours.
Shalik Nanaji Avtade, a farmer from Kolgaon in Maregaon taluka of Yavatmal district, committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in his field on Friday. Due to heavy rains, his crops were destroyed and it was impossible for him to get back the investment. Therefore he was worried about how to pay the debt. The villagers said that he must have taken the extreme step due to his weak financial condition.
Shalik Avtade is survived by his parents, wife and two daughters.
In other incident, a farmer from Lonkhadi in Pusad taluka also in Yavatmal district committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in his field. The name of the farmer is Fakirrao Chandrabhan Bolke (50). A letter was found in his pocket stating that he is committing suicide due to constant crop loss and increasing loan. He had three acres of farm. He used to work on other people’s farms too to support his family as there was no income from his farm. The recent heavy rains had ruined the crop in his field. Due to falling prices of farm produce, he was in a deep crisis. Finally, Fakirrao Bolke committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in his field on Friday morning.
In Deoli, farmer Sanjay Devrao Ghode (46), a resident of Kuradkar Pura, Ward No 12, Deoli, hanged himself at his residence. The reason behind him taking the extreme step is said to be continuous crop loss and increasing debt. It is learnt that Sanjay was doing farming business over his ancestral field in Ekpala area. He had taken a Rs 1 lakh crop loan from the bank. He had also taken loans from some private lenders in the village for farming. But this year due to crop loss he committed suicide due to increasing loan, one of his family member said. He is survived by two daughters, wife, mother, father to mourn his loss.
