Yavatmal: In a terrible accident that took place near Belgavhan on Pusad-Digras Road in Yavatmal district as many as six people lost their lives while 10 others suffered injuries when their three-wheeler fell off the bridge on Tuesday at around 10.30 am.
As per reports, some people of Banjara community from Jawaharnagar (Dhundi) were going to Umri (Pohradevi) to thank God for fulfilling their wishes. As many as 16 people were going to Umri in a Ape three-wheeler belonging to one Dnyaneshwar Ganesh Rathod on Tuesday. After passing through the Dhundi Ghat when the vehicle reached the small bridge near Belgavhan, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell off the bridge into the nullah.
Four people, reportedly, died on the spot. They included Jyoti Naga Chavhan, aged 60, a resident of Dhundi, Vasram Chavhan, 60, of Dhanora, Parvata Ramesh Jadhav, aged 50 of Vasantpur, Usha Vishnu Rathod, aged 50, a resident of Dhundi. The remaining 12 injured people were rushed to Medical Hospital in Pusad. However, Lilabai Vasram Chavhan, aged 65, a resident of Dhanora and Savitri Ganesh Rathod, aged 60 of Dhundi, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment.
Two seriously injured children Prathamesh Arjun Rathod, aged 6, a resident of Pandurna and Raj Rahul Chavhan, aged 5 of Toki Tandat Moha, were referred to Nanded for further treatment.
The terrible accident of the devotees left a pall of gloom in Dhundi village. They were on their way to sacrifice a goat to the Goddess at Pohradevi for fulfilment of their wishes. Strangely, the goat which was also in the Ape vehicle remained unscathed.
On getting information about the terrible accident, MLA Indranil Naik visited the injured in the hospital. He gave instructions for proper treatment of the victims and provided financial assistance. He also met relatives of the victims and consoled them in their terrible hour of grief.
Driver’s suicide attempt
Following the death of six in the ghastly mishap, the driver of the three-wheeler Dnyaneshwar Rathod, who himself was injured, was very upset and became mentally disturbed. He reportedly tried to hang himself from a nearby tree. However, the people at the spot caught him and admitted him to the Sub-District Hospital for treatment. The rural police are investigating the incident.
