Nagpur: As many as 6 women were drowned in Wainganga River near village Ganpur in Chamorshi taluka of Gadchiroli district when their boat capsized.
The tragic incident took place at around 11 am on Tuesday. According to reports,7 women from village Ganpur namely Pushpa Mukteshwar Zade (45), Jijabai Dadaji Raut (55), Revanta Harichandra Zade (40), Sushma Sachin Raut(24), Mayabai Ashok Raut (45), Budhabai Devaji Raut (58) and Sarubai Kasture, all the residents of village Ganpur, were going to Chandrapur district in the boat for the labour work of plucking chillies. The boat suddenly overturned in the middle of the Wainganga River and all the six women drowned. The boatman, however, saved himself and a woman named Sarubai Kasture.
On getting information, police reached the spot and started a search operation to find the drowned women. Bodies of 2 women were found and 4 others are still missing. The bodies of Jijabai Raut and Pushpa Zade have been recovered. The search was conducted by the team of Disaster Management.
As the news spread, a large number of people reached the spot, many of them assisted the rescue team in searching for the women. Meanwhile, MP Ashok Nete reached the spot and enquired about the incident. Additional SP Kumar Chinta, SDO Uttam Todsam, Chamorshi Tehsildar Prashant Ghorude, Gadchiroli SDPO Mayur Bhujbal also reached the spot and supervised the rescue operations.
According to a report, the two groups would mostly walk across the exposed river bed on any other routine day. One of the deceased women was the wife of a local police warden (Patil) who used to accompany them to Chandrapur. The report said water was released from Chamorshi’s Chichdoh barrage into the river a couple of days ago which caused the water level to swell. The river currently has around nine-feet water which is sufficient for a boat to capsize.
