In reply, MIL stated that OLS was usually conducted after every two years. The last OLS for Nagpur Airport was conducted in the year 2018 by M/s Raj Technologies. It was assessed and certified by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in 2019. As per that OLS, 97 structures were proving to be ‘obstacles for Nagpur Airport. Accordingly, action was initiated against the owners/violators of the height norms under the provisions of the Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions Caused by Buildings and Trees etc) Rules, 1994.

Responding to the notices issued, owners/violators in 19 cases reduced the height of respective structures/constructions. With the report on action taken so far, MIL has sent details of the ‘obstacle’ structures to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The final powers for removal/demolition of the ‘obstacles’ were vested in DGCA as per the rules, stated Laxminarayan R Bhat, Deputy General Manager (Operations and Safety), MIL, in reply to Kolarkar’s application.

The ‘obstacle structures’ include several apartments, masts of four top telecom service providers, apart from some privately owned constructions, a water treatment plant.
