A simple dish from British cuisine made of meat with a crust of mashed potato. The dish is commonly made with beef or lamb, the latter being known as “shepherd’s pie”
Ingredients:
½ cup oil
2 big onion [chopped]
1 carrot [chopped]
4-5 cloves garlic [chopped]
500 gms meat [minced]
3-4 tbsp tomato puree
2 tbsp maida
½ liter meat stock/water
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tomatoes [chopped]
1 cup green peas
½ cup parsley
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
3-4 potatoes [boiled and mashed with bit of milk and salt and pepper]
½ cup grated cheese
Method:
Heat oil in a sauce pan add onion and sauté till transparent add carrots, garlic, tomatoes and sauté until veggies becomes soft.
Add minced meat and cook till color becomes light and add stock and cook till meat gets cooked and water evaporates.
Add maida and sauté for 1-2 mins add tomatoe puree, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and mix well.
Add peas and parsley in the end and sauté for 2mins and remove from flame.
Take an oven proof dish and put the meat mixture and spread properly.
Make a layer of of mashed potatoes on the top of the meat and sprinkle cheese over the top.
Bake at 210o C for about 20 mins, until cheese turns golden brown.
Serve hot directly from the casserole.
