The unit is Mahagenco’s first super-critical power generating set at KTPS which saves coal and is environment-friendly.
Nagpur: Taking a stallion jump in power generation, the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) has begun commercial operations of eighth 660 MW unit at its Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS). The eighth unit of 660 MW is Mahagenco’s first super-critical power generating set at KTPS. The unit in the power plant is first to be based on the technology which saves coal and is environment-friendly. The unit replaces four age-old 120 MW sets at the plant.
The capacity addition takes Mahagenco’s installed power generation capacity to 12,077 MW, including 8,640 MW from coal-based thermal power, 672 MW by gas, 2,585 MW from hydro power and 180 MW from solar power.
Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) is located besides sprawling premises of Shri Mahalaxmi Jagdamba Devi in Koradi, barely 11 kilometers away from Second Capital City of Nagpur. The power plant is one of the four major power plants in Vidarbha — a power surplus region in the State. The power station was set in 1970 and began operations in 1974.
“The set achieved commercial operations. We expect that by March 2016, two more units of 660 MW at KTPS will achieve this milestone,: an official of Mahagenco said. “Super-critical sets have their advantages, like environment-friendly and consuming less coal,” added the official.
The coal for the project will be sourced from Gare Palma II coal mine in Chhattisgarh which is meant to fire Mahagenco’s new projects. The three new sets at KTPS will require 9.1 metric tonnes of coal a year i.e. 25000 metric tonnes daily, informed the official.
