Background:
In 2012, the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India (DCI) had introduced NEET for taking admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in government or private medical colleges in India. However, for several reasons, the CBSE and MCI delayed the exam by a year.

On July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court scrapped the NEET exam in favour of 115 petitions and announced that private medical institutions should not conduct their graduate and post graduate admissions on the basis of NEET.

On April 11, 2016, the Supreme court decided to hear the MCI petition and on April 28, the apex court gives a green signal to a single common medical entrance test just before two days of the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Test (AIPMT) which is now to be considered as NEET Phase 1.

According to the proposal, NEET will be held in two phases. The NEET Phase 1 was conducted on May 1 and the second phase is scheduled on July 24.

Over 6 lakh students appeared for the NEET Phase – 1 at 1,040 examination centres across 52 cities on May 1. Amid the reports on cheating, a group of eight people got arrested from Varanasi for providing the question paper to the candidates.

Now, the students will appear for the second phase on July 24. The results for the same will get declared on August 17.

On the other hand, the Maharashtra government conducted the common medical entrance exam on May 5. The state has asked the supreme court for the exemption from NEET or the apex court should allow them to conduct their own entrance exam. The supreme court verdict is yet to come on the same.
