Industries in Vid, Marathwada to get power at concessional rates

In a major boost to industries in backward Vidarbha and Marathwada, the Cabinet Sub-Committee, formed under the chairmanship of Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, has approved the move to provide power at concessional rates to the industrial units in the regions. The concessional rates will come into force from April 1, 2016.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee was set up in May last to examine concessions in power tariffs for industries in Vidarbha and Marathwada, North Maharashtra and D & D+ areas. The other members of the committee included Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan, Transport Minister Divakar Raote, Social Justice Minister rajkumar Badole, and Adivasi Development Minister Vishnu Savara. The committee held two meetings and gave its not to provide power at concessional rates to the industrial units in the regions.

The State Government had announced during the Budget Session to give Rs 1000 crore for concessional power to industrial units in the four regions. In September 2015, Bawankule had formed a committee to suggest an action plan for reducing power tariff. The committee was headed by Nagpur Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar. He had conducted hearing of consumer representatives and submitted its report to Bawankule. Another committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary.

This committee had also recommended reducing industrial power tariff. Bawankule had submitted reports of both committees to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The issue was discussed in the Cabinet meeting and subsequently the Cabinet Sub-Committee was formed.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee examined various aspects before approving concessional power tariffs for industries in Vidarbha and Marathwada, North Maharashtra and D & D+ areas.
