Nagpur: Following the directives of Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has stopped collecting non-segregated garbage from houses and commercial establishments from Thursday. Those found not segregating the dry and wet waste, could even be fined, according to sources.

NMC has issued directives to the two private agencies and 10 zones to stop collecting non-segregated garbage from Thursday. The civic body is hopeful of full cooperation from people. Nodal officer of solid waste management Dr Gajendra Mahalle said that already, partitioning has been done in 400 vehicles to collect and store wet and dry garbage separately. Directives have been given to private agencies to first transport wet garbage in big vehicles to Bhandewadi Dumping Yard, followed by dry waste, he said.

NMC has created a facility to dispose and store wet and dry waste separately at the dumping yard. The treatment plant there will be given 200 metric tonne wet waste. Remaining wet waste will be converted into a windrow on the left hand side of the yard. It will be treated and reused whenever private agencies are finalized to produce compost, sources said.

Dry waste will be dumped on right hand side of the yard. There are 150 rag pickers authorized at the yard for the last few years. It will become easy for them to identify and pick selected materials from dry waste. If the plan materializes, it will be for the first time that the civic body will dump and store wet and dry garbage separately at the yard.

According to sources, the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) and staffers of the Health Department will fine those found dumping garbage in the open. If the agencies refuse to collect non-segregated garbage, people may try to dump garbage in the open. Therefore, strict monitoring will be done in various ways. NMC is looking into levying a fine for non-segregation of garbage despite repeated reminders, sources added.

Less than 10% of 1,100 metric tonne (MT) garbage is being segregated by houses in the city as on date.
