Nagpur: A New Year gift will never be forgotten by three persons as their lives were saved by a retired brain-dead policeman by way of donation of his organs, according to media reports.
The report said that a retired policeman, who died on Thursday in New Era Hospital due to severe head injury, served a new lease of life to three patients in Nagpur on the eve of New Year. Prabhakar Gopichand Samarth (64), was found unconscious at Ganeshpeth Road with severe head injury on December 28 at 10.30 pm. He was immediately admitted to New Era hospital. In spite of all efforts by doctors for two days, his condition deteriorated and a panel of doctors declared him brain dead at 3.40pm on December 30.
According to reports, after being counselled for organ donation by Dr Ashwini Choudhary, Samarth’s wife Kanta and brother Sudhakar agreed to donate his organs to needy patients. His liver was donated to a 56-year-old man at New Era Hospital, one kidney was transplanted to a 42-year-old woman at New Era Hospital while the second kidney was given to a 71 year-old man at Kingsway Hospital.
This was the 85th deceased organ donation of Nagpur conducted through the Nagpur Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), and the 18th organ donation of 2021.
Dr Sanjay Kolte, ZTCC Nagpur Secretary said that despite it being a pandemic year, 31 kidneys and 18 livers were transplanted in Nagpur Zone this year through 18 donors. Till date, 232 vital organs have been harvested and 203 transplants have been completed in Nagpur zone. New Era Hospital staff created an honour corridor and paid tributes to the donor.
