Nagpur: Evading arrest for 43 years, an accused in assault case was nabbed by Nagpur cops on Saturday after his name figured in a list of government beneficiaries. The accused, Deepak Bansod, who is now 75 years old, went absconding from Sitabuldi area in 1979 following a case was registered against him in an assault case.
According to police, in 1979, a case was registered at Sitabuldi Police Station against Bansod under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt). He was arrested in the case at that time, and was also produced in a local court, which had granted bail to him. However, soon after being released on bail, Bansod had left his rented accommodation in Sitabuldi area and went untraceable.
Reports said that as the accused Bansod was not appearing in the court for more than 40 years, he was declared ‘proclaimed absconder’ by the court. But he was finally traced by the police after his name appeared as a beneficiary in government schemes recently, police added. The Crime Branch caught Bansod from Deshpande Layout area in Trimurti Nagar in the city. He was handed-over to Sitabuldi police for further action.
The arrest was made by PI Vitthalsingh Rajput, ASIs Vilas Chovitkar, Shekhar Shukla, Gajendra, Sachin and others under the guidance of DCP Detection Chinmay Pandit.
