Nagpur: Monsoon arrived with a bang as Nagpur and Vidarbha were drenched with heavy rain on Monday evening. According to the met department, the rainy season officially commenced on June 16 in the region.
Heavy rains hit Nagpur around 7 pm on Monday accompanied with thunder and lightning, bringing relief from the hot day. Within three-and-a-half hours on Monday evening, the city received 60.4 mm rainfall. Due to heavy downpour, some areas also witnessed water logging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places of Vidarbha on Monday.
Nagpur recorded a downpour on Monday as predicted. The rainfall also brought down the maximum temperature to 33.1 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature was 25.4 degrees. As a result, Nagpurians finally got much needed relief from summer heat. Apart from water-logging, some areas reported power supply interruption too, for some time. Due to water-logging, traffic jams were reported at some locations till late night. The Gorakshan Temple end of Gowari Shaheed Flyover saw water-logging.
All districts of Vidarbha witnessed good rainfall, Gondia being the wettest after Arjunimorgaon recorded as much as 32.6 mm rainfall.
Monsoon has brought down the soaring mercury levels. On Friday, the maximum temperature of Nagpur was 33.1 degree Celsius. Gondia was the coolest at 30 degree Celsius while Buldhana was at 31. Wardha recorded the highest maximum temperature of 36 degree Celsius.
Forecast suggests that Nagpur and other districts will receive ‘widespread’ to ‘fairly widespread’ rainfall in the coming week. Meteorologically, widespread refers to around 76-100% stations recording rains while fairly widespread signifies 51-75% stations reporting rainfall.
