The Police are taught many things in their training including sections of IPC and Criminal justice system but they are often accused of violation of human rights and this dents their image in the eyes of the public. Only on Tuesday, a horrifying picture of how brutal and inhuman the Police can be seen during the protests by the Congress in New Delhi over ED questioning their president Sonia Gandhi.

An ordinary Police man in Khaki was seen dragging All India Youth Congress President Srinivasan by pulling him with his hair from his own vehicle. The picture soon went viral and even ordinary citizens without any political affiliations were enraged by the act of the Policeman.

The Congress workers were protesting in a peaceful manner and there was no chance of any provocation by them. Slogan shouting, showing placards, raising of banners and posters and even sitting in agitations are considered to be part of non-violence protests appropriate in the democracy.

There are no chance that Congress men and women would indulgein the slightest kind of violence and attack the law enforcing agencies.Police often use water jets to disperse the crowd as a first step followed by many other methods right up to firing of bullets on agitators.

Agitators being dragged on roads to clear the path is also a kind of method adopted by Police. But without any provocation in the said incident, a Policeman was seen pulling Srinivasan’s hair, has certainly damaged the image of Khaki.

All these years of India’s independence when the country is all set to celebrate its 75th anniversary, many commissions were set up on changing the Policing and Police reforms. These are needed but what we need is a change of their mentality in handling the public. There should be a provision for tendering an apology in case the Police goes wrong. The Judiciary should also look into this aspect.
