Nagpur: Hours after a leopard injured a passer-by near Jamtha on Wardha Road; the Forest Department tranquillized and captured the wild animal here on Sunday. The wild animal was then taken to the transit care centre at Seminary Hills.
According to police sources, the leopard was spotted close to Suretech Hospital between 7.30 and 8 am leading to an uproar. The leopard’s presence attracted people’s attention and soon a crowd gathered. Amid the chaos the animal attacked 40-year-old Dyaneshwar Thakre, who was passing from there on a bicycle. His injuries were not of serious nature, informed police sources.
The big cat is expected to have come from the thickets around 5 to 6km away from the hospital site, experts suggested and mentioned that the area has been a corridor for movement of wild animals, as also seen from the presence of tiger towards the rear side of the hospital.
A team of forest officials rushed to the spot after getting a call from the Hingna police station. By the time the team reached the leopard had gone to the other side of the highway. It could not move much because its hind legs appeared to be injured. The animal was tranquilizer and taken to the transit treatment centre.
Sources further stated that the diagnosis would happen later, as the veterinarians advised not to administer another dose of anaesthesia immediately. Till evening, the leopard was under the influence of the tranquiliser, said Hate. The cause of injury can only be known after further diagnosis.
