Nagpur: With summer temperatures soaring and the demand for electricity peaking, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MahaGenco) has successfully breached the 10,000 MW power generation mark for the second successive month.
This accomplishment comes as the state experiences a surge in power consumption due to the usage of energy-intensive cooling devices. MahaGenco has demonstrated its capability to meet the escalating energy requirements, and with the anticipated rise in temperatures, the company is prepared to further augment power production to cater to the escalating demand.
On May 17 at 7:45 pm, MahaGenco recorded a power generation of 10,070 MW, effectively supplying the necessary energy to the grid as the state’s demand reached 28,000 MW. This achievement is particularly notable considering the intensifying summer conditions, as residents increasingly rely on air conditioners and coolers to combat the heat and humidity. The upcoming days are expected to witness a further surge in power demand until the arrival of rainfall.
Preparation and Planning: P. Anbalgan, Managing Director of MahaGenco, expressed his appreciation for the MahaGenco team and attributed their success to meticulous planning. Recognizing that power demand significantly escalates during peak summer, preparations for “Mission 8000 MW” were initiated well in advance. Since March, MahaGenco has been actively stockpiling coal and ensuring the optimal functioning of its generation units to preempt any potential issues. In fact, during March, MahaGenco surpassed the 10,000 MW generation mark for the first time, achieving a power generation of 10,102 MW on March 17 at 8 pm.
MahaGenco has also benefited from heavy rainfall during March and April, enabling increased production from its hydro units due to the availability of ample water in dams. This internal production ramp-up has resulted in the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) avoiding the need to depend on private producers or spot markets. This strategic decision has safeguarded the company from incurring significant financial expenses, as MahaGenco’s power is the most cost-effective option in the market.
As the summer season progresses and temperatures continue to rise, MahaGenco remains prepared to meet the escalating power demand. The company is committed to ensuring a consistent power supply to the state of Maharashtra and aims to maintain its position as a reliable and affordable source of electricity. By leveraging its well-planned strategies and sufficient resources, MahaGenco seeks to sustain its impressive power generation capabilities in the coming months.
MahaGenco’s successful breach of the 10,000 MW power generation mark for the second consecutive month demonstrates its ability to meet the increasing electricity demand during the scorching summer season. The company’s proactive measures in coal stockpiling, unit maintenance, and reliance on hydro power have contributed to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. As MahaGenco continues to adapt to changing conditions and growing power requirements, it remains committed to delivering uninterrupted and affordable electricity supply to the people of Maharashtra.
