Nagpur: In an effort to address the issue of absconding jail inmates who were released on parole and furlough during the COVID-19 pandemic, the State Police headquarters in Maharashtra has taken decisive action. As per a report published in a local English daily, it has been revealed that a significant number of inmates, a total of 573, have absconded since their release on emergency parole.
Among the regions affected by this situation is Nagpur, where 36 inmates have failed to return to the jail, posing a potential threat to society. To tackle this issue, Suhas Warke, the Special Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), has issued orders to all police units to register offenses against these absconding inmates, apprehend them, and ensure their prompt return to jail.
According to Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar, the Nagpur police have already registered offenses against four of the absconding inmates, and cases against the remaining inmates are expected to be filed soon. The seriousness of the situation is emphasized by a retired police official who highlights the potential threat these individuals pose to society. Senior police officials have expressed concerns over the large number of prisoners currently out of jail.
The proactive measures taken by the State Police in cracking down on absconding inmates are aimed at sending a strong message to those who may contemplate violating the law. By taking firm action against these individuals, law enforcement hopes to deter others from following suit. A police official has confirmed that the department will continue to act firmly in apprehending absconding inmates and ensuring their safe return to jail.
It is important to note that the COVID-19 pandemic had necessitated the release of prisoners on emergency parole or furlough in various states, including Maharashtra, to mitigate the risk of virus transmission within crowded prison facilities. However, a number of inmates took advantage of this situation and failed to return, resulting in the current predicament.
The State Police’s efforts to track down and bring back absconding inmates demonstrate their commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the law. As the crackdown intensifies, it is expected that more absconding inmates will be apprehended and brought back to face the consequences of their actions.
The State Police’s initiative serves as a reminder to all that absconding from legal custody will not be tolerated, and individuals who attempt to evade the law will be pursued and held accountable for their actions. The situation calls for continued vigilance and a collaborative approach between the police and relevant authorities to ensure the successful return of all absconding inmates, thereby restoring order and security within the state’s correctional system.
