Nagpur: A renowned doctor, Dr Sunil Motiramji Lanjewar, a resident of Ramdaspeth, received threatening phone calls demanding Rs 40 lakh as extortion. The incident has prompted the police to take immediate action to ensure safety of Dr Lanjewar and his family.
According to Sitabuldi Police, Dr Lanjewar (65), who runs Dadasaheb Lanjewar Hospital in Sriman Complex, Janata Chowk, found himself targeted by an extortionist demanding a one-time payment of Rs 40 lakh. The threatening call was made from a mobile number identified as 9890087241 on May 15, at around 4.30 pm. The caller, speaking in Hindi, warned Dr Lanjewar that failure to comply with the demand would lead to dire consequences. Alarmed with the seriousness of the threat, Dr Lanjewar promptly lodged a complaint with the Sitabuldi police.
Recognising the severity of the situation, the police registered a case of extortion and immediately initiated an investigation into the matter. However, the ordeal did not end for Dr Lanjewar. On Monday, he received yet another call from the same individual, reiterating the demand for Rs 40 lakh and issuing threats to his life. Realising the gravity of the situation, DrLanjewar promptly informed Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar about the new threat.
Responding swiftly to the doctor’s plea for help, the CP took immediate action. He directed the Special Branch to deploy a 24-hour armed police force to provide security at both Dr Lanjewar’s residence and his hospital premises. The increased police presence aims to ensure the safety and well-being of Dr Lanjewar, his wife Dr Chhaya, and their family members, said a police officer of Sitabuldi Police Station.
