Large monitor lizard, rescued in Besa, released in Gorewada forest

Nagpur: A team of Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Centre, released a monitor lizard and two Indian flapshell turtles in their natural habitat, on Sunday.

Jagdish Ayachit, a resident of Besa, found a monitor lizard in residential premises on Sunday afternoon. Immediately, he informed ‘Sarpamitra’ Sharad Chaudhari. The Sarpamitra captured the straying 3.5 ft reptile and handed it over to NGO Help For Animals. Thereafter, the NGO handed over the monitor lizard to the Gorewada Rescue Centre.

Similarly, a few days ago, the Rescue Centre team had rescued two Indian flapshell turtles. At the centre, the Indian flapshell turtles and monitor lizard were examined. The turtles and the reptile were released in their natural habitat far from the city on Sunday evening. Before releasing the reptiles, veterinarian Dr Sujit Kolangat and Dr Mayur Pawse checked their health status.

The whole operation was conducted under the supervision of Shatnik Bhagwat, Gorewada Zoo Director. Sarika Khot, Pratik Ghate, Shubham Chhapekar, Swapnil Bodhane, Ashish Kohale, Sumit Kodane, Manoj Bopche, Pradeep Chaudhari, Avinash Sarovare, and Nikhil Nimbarte worked hard for success of the entire operation.
