Pune: A war of words has erupted between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray and the ruling ally, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), over the unfulfilled promise of a ‘toll-free Maharashtra.’

Thackeray questioned the BJP on the state of roads filled with potholes and traffic jams and demanded answers on why toll and road taxes are still being collected. He further expressed disappointment over the delay in implementing infrastructure projects and the lack of amenities and safety on the Mumbai-Nagpur Super Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg), which has resulted in several accidents.

Raj Thackeray raised concerns about the poor condition of roads in Maharashtra, despite a Marathi leader like Union Minister for Highways Nitin Gadkari being at the helm. He criticized the BJP for failing to deliver on its promise of making the state ‘toll-free,’ and questioned where the money collected through tolls is being utilized.

The MNS President highlighted the prolonged delays in executing critical projects, such as the Mumbai sea-link and the Mumbai-Goa highway, which have taken 10 years and 17 years respectively. The Mumbai-Nagpur Super Expressway, though inaugurated, lacks essential amenities and safety measures, leading to a staggering death toll of over 400 people in accidents.

The verbal sparring between the BJP and MNS escalated on social media following an incident in Sinnar, Nashik, where MNS activists reportedly vandalized a toll post. This incident was used by the BJP to criticize the MNS. Earlier, Amit Raj Thackeray, an MNS leader, was allegedly delayed and harassed at a toll booth, sparking tensions between the two parties.

Raj Thackeray emphasized the plight of ordinary citizens who continue to pay tolls without receiving the promised amenities. He urged the BJP to address the grievances of the people who bear the brunt of deteriorating infrastructure and congested roads.

The issue of traffic snarls and infrastructure problems was a subject of heated debate during the Maharashtra Legislative session, with opposition parties and the government engaging in fiery exchanges.

“Now, Amit Thackeray is in politics, so there are bound to be accusations… But what about the sufferings of the people who pay up the toll without getting the promised amenities,” said Raj Thackeray who was in Pune for some party meetings.

The ongoing feud between MNS President Raj Thackeray and the ruling ally BJP reflects the deep-rooted discontent over the unfulfilled promise of a ‘toll-free Maharashtra’ and the state’s infrastructure woes. As the state grapples with subpar roads and delayed projects, the demand for accountability and action from the government grows stronger. The authorities must address these pressing concerns to ensure a safer and smoother commute for the citizens of Maharashtra.
