5 saleswomen of Nagpur jeweller held; gold worth Rs 86 lakh seized

Nagpur: Tehsil Police have arrested five saleswomen working with Chimurkar Brothers Jewellers in Itwari, Sarafa Bazar, Nagpur, and recovered stolen gold ornaments worth over Rs 86 lakh from their possession. The ornaments were stolen by the women while working in the jewellery shop, police said.

The accused have been identified as Asmita Prakash Lute (39), Priya Pranav Raut (30), Puja Rajaram Bhanarkar (20), Kalyani Manoj Khadatkar (33), Bhagyashree Pavan Indhankar (30) and Manisha Omprakash Mohurle (38). Asmita, Priya, Puja, Kalyani and Manisha have been arrested by the police.

Bhagyashree Indhankar, the sixth accused, was not taken into custody as she is pregnant, said police, who recovered valuables worth Rs 5 lakh from her.

DCP Zone III Gorakh Bhamre said, the complainant Shantu Deepak Chimurkar (28) had informed that the saleswomen committed the theft between 2019 and August 30, 2023. After registering the case under Sections 381 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, the police launched an investigation and recovered stolen valuables from their possession.

The case came to fore after the jeweller had handed over one of the employees, Jayesh Sonkusre, to the police for his alleged role in stealing a gold ring early in 2023. Sonkusre had admitted to stealing to pay his tuition fees. After his bail, he revealed how his female colleagues at the jewellery shop were involved in thefts for some years. The accused women, who worked as saleswomen to billing clerks, stole only those jewellery which did not have any bar coded identification tag. By the time their acts came to fore, the six women had already left their jobs at the jeweller’s shop.

Most valuables (worth Rs 36 lakh) were recovered from Asmita Lute whose husband too worked at another jeweller’s shop. Lute is learnt to have left her job at the jeweller’s in December 2022.

Under the guidance of DCP Bhamre, the arrest was made by PI Vinod Patil, PI Sandip Buwa, PSI Sadashiv Kanse, and staff including Sanjay Shahu, Sandip Gawali, Shekhar Samudre, Rohidas Jadhav, Vaibhav Kulsange, Kunal Korche, Vaibhav, Sarla, Pranjali, Jyoti, Bhavna, Sunita, Bhamle, Mishra, Nirmala and others.
