Amnesty scheme: NMC mops up Rs 18.63 cr in tax arrears in one month

Nagpur: Post floating of revised amnesty scheme, the cash strapped Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has netted a revenue of Rs. 18.63 crore as taxpayers cleared their arrears. About 25,879 property owners took advantage of the rebate announced by the civic body to clear their dues.

Post demand from various quarters, the Urban Development Department (UDD) had revised the format of the rebate scheme and slashed multiple penal interest charged from defaulters. The new rebate scheme was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after the meeting of the District Planning Committee (DPC) in Nagpur on January 1, 2024.

As per figures compiled by the Revenue Department, about Rs. 18,63,79,458 was collected from the ten zones of NMC till February 5. The dues related to property tax, water cess, market rent, ottas rent, land use cess. In the new scheme, NMC provided rebate of about 80 percent on the penal interest it used to charge on the outstanding amount.

NMC said the 25,879 property owners who took advantage and cleared their dues got a benefit to the tune of Rs.4 crore. The rebate scheme is available till March 31, 2024, and maximum citizens should take advantage of the same, appealed Milind Meshram, Deputy Commissioner, Revenue, NMC.

A cursory look at the data compiled by NMC reveals that maximum benefit of the new rebate scheme was taken by property owners in Nehru Nagar Zone where 4116 people benefited and they paid Rs. 2,23,80,441 to clear their dues.

In Laxmi Nagar Zone, about 3790 persons benefited as they paid Rs. 2,92,39,313 towards the dues to NMC and they were followed by those in Dharampeth Zone where 3695 benefited as they cleared Rs. 2,79,59,219 dues and 3,695 in Ashi Nagar zone paid Rs 2.79 crore.

The scheme is applicable to those who have not paid property tax, water tax and rent on market department shops. Under the NMC’s Abhay Yojana (Amnesty Scheme 2023-24), citizens are getting an 80% discount on penalty charges on outstanding property tax, water charges and shop rents if they pay before March 31, 2024. For this, the beneficiaries can visit NMC headquarters or the respective zonal office or deposit the tax/fee online, the civic body said.
