NMC seeks support of NGOs to keep Nagpur clean

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sought support from volunteers of city-based non-government organisations (NGOs) in improving city’s sanitation. In a meeting held at NMC’s headquarters, additional municipal commissioner Anchal Goyal appealed the NGOs to make citizens aware of importance of cleanliness and involve them in disposing segregated garbage.

Currently, there are 7000 sanitary workers engaged in maintaining sanitation of the city that has total population of 30 lakh. “Getting assistance from NGOs will also act as morale-booster for sanitary workers,” Goyal said. Director of Solid Waste Management Dr Gajendra Mahalle appealed the NGOs to support NMC’s ‘Swachh Market’ competition. Mahalle even mentioned how some NGOs ideate to get some areas cleaned through competitions.

“Creating cleanliness awareness in every mohalla, apartment or society is also important,” he said. During the discussion, representatives from the NGOs suggested NMC to create a system to address complaints of citizens regarding unclean areas. “Hazardous waste should be disposed of properly. Shopkeepers in the city’s market areas should clean their shops at night,” they added.
