Nagpur: Women cops of the ‘Police didi’ scheme of city police along with the all-women anti-eve-teasing squad ‘Damini pathak’ would be actively monitoring crowded places where youngsters throng to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday.
Apart from the routine bandobast blueprint, Joint CP Aswati Dorje has deployed the sizeable squad of trained women cops groomed as ‘Police didi’.
Usually, they work with school and college girls to raise awareness against untoward advances and sexual harassment. They also instil confidence in them to lodge complaints about inducement to elope or attempts to trap them in abusive relationships.
Every year, many cases of elopement, kidnapping and other forms of sexual abuse reach the police during the weeks before and after Valentine’s Day. The trend has been reversed to a large extent after the implementation of ‘Police didi’ scheme.
“Though the concept of ‘Police didi’ is for round-the-year protection against undue advances, it would certainly help on special occasions like Valentine’s Day, when young girls are likely to fall into the lure of false promises of marriage, jobs, money and other enticements. We have been instructing our ‘Police didi’ cops to be understanding, give a patient hearing and redress the grievances of any girl with due respect,” said Dorje. She added the ‘Police didi’ cops have been groomed to ensure they understand the genuine problems of girls they are dealing with.
Dorje said strict security deployment would also take place from Tuesday evening onwards at key places where young crowds are likely to gather, like Futala promenade, malls and also liquor joints and pubs.
“It would be an all-out security deployment, from the top brass to the grass root level. The security blueprint has been already made to thwart any misdemeanour towards women and girl hostels, parks, promenades, malls, pubs and such places,” said Dorje, adding any unruly behaviour would attract strict penal provisions.
Dorje also stated the all-women anti-eve-teasing squads, ‘Damini pathaks’, would patrol across the city along with other surveillance teams. “Any women or girls feeling uncomfortable or irked by any unwanted advance must dial 112 or approach the nearest police station to lodge a complaint. We’ll work on zero tolerance mode,” said the joint police commissioner.
