Maharashtra to be USD 1 trillion economy by 2027-28: Governor Bais

Mumbai: Governor Ramesh Bais revealed the Maharashtra Government’s ambitious goal of achieving a one trillion dollar economy by the fiscal year 2027-28, aligning with the national target of a five trillion dollar economy. The announcement was made during the commencement of a Special Session of the State Legislature at Vidhan Bhavan in South Mumbai, focused on the Maratha quota.

Governor Bais highlighted significant developments and initiatives contributing to the State’s economic growth. He stated, “In this year, 75 projects with a total investment of Rs. 61,576 crore have been approved under the Package Scheme of Incentives. These projects are expected to generate more than 53,000 employment opportunities across the state.”

Emphasizing Maharashtra’s prowess in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), Governor Bais shared that the state leads the nation in this regard. “The foreign direct investment in Maharashtra has reached Rs. 65,500 crore, constituting an impressive 38.78 percent of the country’s total FDI,” he added.

Governor Bais also provided insights into the state’s recent accomplishments on the global stage. In January 2024, the Maharashtra government signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) amounting to more than Rs. 3.53 lakh crore at the World Economic Forum held in Davos. These agreements are projected to create approximately two lakh jobs, contributing significantly to the state’s employment landscape.

The Governor’s address underscored the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth, attracting investments, and creating employment opportunities in Maharashtra. The ambitious target of a one trillion dollar economy reflects the state’s determination to play a pivotal role in India’s economic trajectory. The legislature session continues with a focus on critical matters, including the Maratha quota, shaping the future trajectory of Maharashtra’s development.
