Nagpur: Tensions escalated at the District Court building in Nagpur on Tuesday, following an incident that involved a physical altercation between a lawyer and his client’s wife. The drama spilled into the nearby streets of Crorepati Lane, creating a turbulent atmosphere fuelled by allegations and counter-allegations. Separate cases have been filed at Sitabuldi and Sadar police stations against both parties involved, local media reported.
According to the media report, the lawyer Swapnil Mohurle was accused of inappropriate behaviour towards the victim woman, a resident of the Gittikhadan area. The couple had taken Mohurle’s services for a 2017-2018 accident case, but suspicions arose regarding the lawyer’s courtroom performance.
According to police, tensions reached a boiling point when the lawyer allegedly sent obscene messages to the woman’s mobile phone. Upon discovering the messages, the woman informed her husband which led to a joint visit to the Bar Association on Tuesday afternoon to file a complaint against the lawyer. The situation took a dramatic turn when, on the third floor of the court building, the lawyer allegedly made obscene comments towards the woman which resulted in her retaliatory slap.
The incident caused a stir among onlookers and created a charged atmosphere within the courthouse. Later in the evening, as the lawyer was leaving with his associate lawyers, another confrontation occurred in Crorepati Lane. The lawyer alleged that during this encounter, he was physically assaulted by the husband and wife, who also purportedly snatched his gold chain.
On the complaint of the woman, the Sadar police have registered a case against the lawyer while Sitabuldi police have booked the couple on the complaint of the lawyer.
