Sept 23 flood: State Govt releases Rs 204 crore more for repair works in Nagpur

Nagpur: Maharashtra Government has released an additional tranche of Rs 204 crore to enable Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to fund the ongoing repair works due to damages in the aftermath of devastating flash floods of September 23 last year. The amount is in addition to Rs 8.38 crore released earlier by the State Government.

The additional special package will enable the civic body to fund works related to the parapet wall of Nag River to prevent recurrence of floods that left behind a trail of devastation. Apart from repairing the wall that is broken at many places, it will also be strengthened. An action plan drafted by a committee chaired by Divisional Commissioner, Nagpur Division, has also proposed to raise its height.

Water from the flooded Nag River had gushed into homes of citizens living on the river’s banks, resulting in losses of in crores of rupees. A Government Resolution (GR) issued by Revenue and Forest Department, Maharashtra Government, mentioned that the State released the aid in the aftermath of deluge, flood or storm or other natural calamities from the State Calamity Fund.

The high intensity rains on the night of September 23 badly damaged the road infrastructure at various places in the city. Further, other public infrastructure also bore the brunt of the floods. Hence, the State Government, acting on the report submitted by Divisional Commissioner, sanctioned the funds of Rs 204 crore for the repairs. The bifurcation of the funds too has been outlined in the GR, wherein Rs 163.23 crore are going to be spent on strengthening of the parapet wall of the Nag River and its tributaries. The total length of the parapet wall that is identified for repair and strengthening is 8.41 kms.

Also, the road infrastructure that needs to be repaired is identified as 61.38 km and for the same Rs. 41.48 crore is allocated in the current aid package. Earlier, the State Government had sanctioned Rs. 8.38 crore that was utilised by the Collectorate to distribute aid to flood affected citizens of Nagpur city. The latest aid amount will be vested with the District Collector who will release the same to NMC as per its requirement.
