Cop among five arrested for robbing vegetable supplier of Rs 4.30 lakh cash in Nagpur

Nagpur: Tehsil Police arrested five members of a gang, including a police constable (PC) attached to Nagpur (Rural) Police Headquarters, for looting Rs 4.30 lakh cash and three gunny bags containing scented tobacco and gutkha from a vegetable supplier and his brother-in-law.

The accused have been identified as Constable Sachin Dilip Meshram (35), a resident of Nagpur (Rural) Police Headquarters, Kapil Nagar, Sandeep Bhimrao Suradkar (40), a resident of Raut Nagar, Dighori, Ritesh Mahadeorao Maske (35), a resident of Itwari, Maskasath, Telipura, Mangesh Tatyarao Sawarkar (42), a resident of Mirchi Bazar, Jai Bhim Chowk, Lakadganj and Abhilash Santosh Namdeo (30), a resident of Plot No 18, Labh Laxmi Nagar, Naka No 4, Kalamna.

According to police, Hemraj Morbaji Nandanwar (44), a resident of Tandapeth, Ladpura, Swami Nagar, Pachpaoli, used to procure fruits and vegetables from villages near Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh (MP) and supply them to wholesalers at Kalamna Market in his Ashok Leyland truck. Sometimes, he used to bring flavoured tobacco and gutkha along with fruits and vegetables by hiding in the truck and supplying the banned products to his brother-in-law Tejas Suresh Bajirao at the latter’s house at Bajirao Lane, Deodhar Mohalla.

Around 5 am on Monday, Nandanwar came along with a box of Rajshree gutkha and five bags of Rimzim flavoured tobacco at his brother-in-law’s house. Posing as policemen, four of the accused came and they threatened to implicate Nandanwar for illegally supplying gutkha and scented tobacco. To hush up the matter, they demanded Rs 3.5 lakh from him. Accused constable Sachin Meshram snatched a bag containing Rs 4.30 lakh cash from Nandanwar’s brother-in-law Bajirao. All the accused then took away three bags of scented tobacco and gutka.

Following Nandanwar’s complaint, police registered a case under Sections 416,419, 171,384, 392, 34 of the Indian Penal Code against the accused persons. Cops recovered Rs 1.19 lakh cash and favoured tobacco worth Rs 37,000 from them. Further investigations are underway.
