Nagpur: As the polling date for Lok Sabha elections 2024 is fast approaching nearer, the campaigning parties are getting more aggressive with every passing day, leaving no stone in taking down one another. While all the parties, including the two prominent contenders BJP and Congress, are pushing their limits to make themselves heard before the voters, it appears the Congress is leading in one game for now.

Yes you heard it right! While the Congress has been apparently gaining momentum in social media campaigning, essentially noteworthy is the fact that BJP is far and outgoing in ground campaigning. While the Congress candidate Vikas Thakre appears to have been going slow in ground campaigning and leading in social media canvassing, the BJP’s Nitin Gadkari is powering his game through ground works

Recently, Congress has come out with some catchy creatives including substantial lines in their social media campaign in order to hammer and move the voters towards their leaders. On the contrary, the BJP is consciously going slow in the online endeavours. Instead the saffron party is focusing more on ground events in Nagpur.

Experts suggest that the reason for the trend is not because BJP intended to miss out on social media audience while it is going all out to maximise its reach. The reason for the existing trend subtly lies in that fact that the BJP has a higher reach and presence on social media as compared to other political parties. “In order to amplify its social media impact the Congress had to go aggressive to set their campaign right,” said an expert on condition of anonymity.

Apart from Nagpur, the scene appears to be different, as the numbers indicate that the BJP is significantly ahead in the social media race, way ahead of Congress, Aam Admi Party (AAP), and other contenders on pan-India level. The saffron party’s IT cell, often considered the party’s most well-oiled machinery, now manages over 50 lakh WhatsApp groups that disseminate poll-related information.

So why does the trend reverse in Nagpur? Another reason cited by a media expert is that when it comes to popularity graph, Gadkari is significantly ahead of Congress candidate Vikas Thakre, and the move to focus more on ground campaigning must be Gadkari’s poll strategy to cool down the voters on burning factors raised by Congress in its social media drive.

“As they, in the poll game, you cannot be sure about the impact until you see the result. Till then rest lies in who fetches what”, he added.
