Nagpur: The Nagpur, a city renowned for its progressive strides towards sustainable urban mobility, witnessed a significant milestone on Monday as yet another eco-friendly electric bus joined the ranks of the NMC-run Aapli Bus service. The arrival of the electric bus, transported to the city atop a trailer truck, sparked excitement among Nagpurians, symbolizing the city’s commitment to green transportation initiatives.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) recently made a strategic decision to terminate its contract with Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) Ltd, which had been overseeing the Integrated Bus Transport Management (IBTM) for Nagpur’s Aapli Bus service. In its place, Mumbai-based Chalo Mobility Private Limited (CMPL) has been appointed as the new operator. This transition is anticipated to bring about notable improvements in the Aapli Bus service, enhancing its efficiency and quality.

With CMPL set to officially commence operations from May 1, the municipal corporation has pledged a substantial sum of Rs 215 crore over a five-year period to facilitate this transition. Notably, this amount exceeds the previous contract payment to DIMTS, reflecting the municipality’s commitment to elevating the standard of public transportation services. A significant aspect of CMPL’s compensation structure lies in its performance-based remuneration, with 40% of the payout contingent upon key metrics such as increasing earnings per kilometre (EPKM) and boosting passenger footfall.

Under the new arrangement, CMPL will assume responsibility for overseeing bus operators and their respective depots, streamlining the management structure. Notably, the provision of conductors will now fall under CMPL’s purview, eliminating the need for separate ticketing agencies. This integrated approach is poised to enhance operational efficiency and accountability within the Aapli Bus service framework.

The transition to eco-friendly electric buses and the appointment of CMPL as the new operator signify a pivotal moment in Nagpur’s journey towards sustainable urban mobility. With a renewed focus on performance-driven management and enhanced operational efficiency, the Aapli Bus service is poised to elevate the standard of public transportation, setting a commendable example for cities across the globe. As Nagpur continues to embrace eco-conscious initiatives, its status as a trailblazer in urban sustainability is further solidified.
