Nagpur: The conviction rate in Nagpur has plummeted, presenting a grim picture of law enforcement efficacy and emboldening criminals to escalate their activities. Over the past two years, more than 16,500 accused in various criminal cases were acquitted, posing a significant challenge to the city police.
Statistics released by the Nagpur police reveal a concerning trend. In 2023, out of 15,123 cases disposed of, only 5,842 resulted in convictions, marking a decline from the already low 42% in 2022 to a disheartening 39%. This downward spiral reflects a growing difficulty in securing convictions, especially in murder cases.

With a higher rate of acquittals and bail grants, law enforcement faces an uphill battle. Repeat offenders roam freely after acquittal or on bail, perpetuating a cycle of crime and undermining public safety. The Supreme Court’s guidelines, prohibiting arrest in cases with less than seven years of potential jail time, further constrain police action, allowing perpetrators to evade accountability even for serious offenses like assault.
To address the crisis, Nagpur’s police brass led by Commissioner Ravinder Singal and other senior officials, is implementing a multifaceted approach. This includes cancelling bail for repeat offenders, invoking stringent charges, and exploring alternative policing strategies to improve the conviction rate.
Recognizing the crucial role of forensic evidence in securing convictions, police officials recently visited the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL). Discussions with Deputy Director Vijay Thakare highlighted key issues in evidence collection and submission, emphasizing the need for adherence to standard operating procedures. Thakare’s insights underscored the importance of meticulous scientific analysis in bolstering prosecution efforts.
The dire state of Nagpur’s conviction rate demands urgent attention and comprehensive reforms in policing and legal procedures. Efforts to enhance evidence collection, streamline forensic analysis, and strengthen prosecution strategies are imperative to restore public trust in the criminal justice system and curb the rising tide of crime in the city.
