Nagpur: After the Nagpur district experienced mild earthquakes of 2.4 to 2.7 magnitude between May 3 and May 9, Geological Survey of India, Central Region (GSI-CR), a scientific agency under Ministry of Earth Sciences, officially announced on Friday it would soon study the recent series of quakes in its upcoming Field Season Programme (FSP).
A release by Press information Bureau (PIB), said GSI officials in near future are going for a detailed geological study to find out the reasons for these sporadic seismic activities. The geologists from Earthquake Geology Division of the GSI-CR are at present continuously working on mapping and sensitivity of these earthquakes. Even before this, 6 incidents of mild earthquakes have already been recorded between February 2024 and April 2024 and reported to the competent authority.
Between May 3 and May9, earthquakes of 2.4 to 2.7 magnitude were recorded on seismographs in and around Nagpur area. The earthquake events were recorded only on seismographs released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Common public did not even get a whiff of the tremors, indicating that its intensity is not that severe and there is nothing much to worry.
It may be mentioned that Nagpur area comes under Zone-II which is less susceptible to earthquakes. Therefore, it is considered a relatively safe zone from major earthquakes, however, the possibility of a small earthquake (mild earthquake) in this area cannot be ruled out. The National Centre for Seismology, New Delhi, a Department under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, nominated by the Government of India, is the nodal agency for reporting these seismic events.
In the map of earthquake prone areas released by the National Centre for Seismology, Nagpur is categorised in Zone-II. Even before this, the Geological Survey of India, Central Region, Nagpur (GSI, CR) has also conducted studies and issued reports from time to time about earthquakes.
