Nagpur: The historically important Kasturchand Park in Nagpur will now be accessible to the general public. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court seeking direction for opening of Kasturchand Park for citizens.
After receiving information about the PIL, the District Collector has decided to extend the park’s operating hours from 5 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 8 pm. According to the petition, the entrance to Kasturchand Park had been locked, and security guards stationed there were denying entry to the public which prohibited them from utilising the ground.
A PIL that was filed in the High Court is currently pending to ensure the proper protection of this historical site. The court had earlier issued a directive to the district administration, including the District Collector, to safeguard the structure and the ground. Upon filing of this PIL, the District Collector dispatched a letter to the Public Prosecutor. As per the contents of the letter, Singham Security Services of Saoner Taluka had deployed ten security guards at Kasturchand Park ground starting January 5, 2021, for security purposes, as detailed in the affidavit submitted to the High Court on January 1, 2021.
However, the number of security guards was reduced from June 15, 2021, and currently, only four guards are stationed there. Additionally, the Collector stated that the park will now be open to citizens for six hours in the morning and three hours in the evening. Expressing dissatisfaction with the Collector’s response, the petitioner has requested through this PIL that the park should be accessible to citizens round the clock.
