Nagpur: On Tuesday, the District and Sessions Court convicted Kanhaiyalal Chakravarti for a rape committed in August 2018 at Gokul Piraya Khadan, Umred WCL, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Chakravarti was found guilty under Sections 376(1), 376(2)(l) and (m), and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court proceedings and sentencing were conducted under Section 235(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973.
He received a life sentence, which mandates imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life. Additionally, Chakravarti was fined Rs. 5,000 for each offence. Failure to pay these fines will result in an additional month of simple imprisonment per offence.
The court ruled that the life sentences will run concurrently. Since Chakravarti has been in custody since August 15, 2018, the time already served will be deducted from his total sentence as per Section 428 of the CrPC.
The case was investigated by Subdivisional Police Officer Poornima Taware, with APP Rashmi Khaparde representing the government in court.
