Rising Fuel Prices: Tax exemption for Mumbai, Pune; no relief for Nagpur!

Nagpur: During the Maharashtra State Budget 2024 announcement in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Government has declared a reduction in taxes on diesel and petrol for the municipal areas of Brihanmumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. While Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane have been granted a tax exemption on diesel, Nagpur, the state’s Second Capital, where fuel prices are soaring to new highs, has been overlooked!

The Maharashtra State Budget 2024, presented to the State Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar, has ignited a fresh debate between East and West Maharashtra.

The tax on diesel has been reduced from 24% to 21%, while the tax on petrol has been decreased from 26% + ₹5.12 per litre to 25% + ₹5.12 per litre.

As a result of these changes, the price of petrol in the municipal areas of Thane, Brihanmumbai, and Navi Mumbai is expected to decrease by approximately 65 paise per litre, and the price of diesel will drop by around ₹2.07 per litre.

However, in Nagpur, where fuel prices are reaching new peaks and straining the common man’s finances, the Maharashtra Government has provided no relief.

Highlighting this disparity, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) General Secretary Vishal Muttemwar expressed his displeasure with the state government’s apparent partiality.

The MPCC General Secretary wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “The fuel prices in Nagpur are the highest in Maharashtra. Why hasn’t this relief been extended throughout the state, especially to Nagpur City? Why are you giving this step-motherly treatment to Nagpur City, @Dev_Fadnavis Ji?”

The ongoing fuel crisis has been a significant factor in driving up food prices. Such benefits should be available to all, and the state government should extend this relief to all citizens of Maharashtra, Muttemwar added.
