Nagpur: Nagpur’s police stations are experiencing a significant shortage of personnel, with a total deficit of 924 police staff across the city. The Gittikhadan and Jaripatka Police Stations are particularly affected, currently operating at half their sanctioned capacities.

The Jaripatka Police Station, for instance, is struggling with severe understaffing, with 139 out of its 283 sanctioned posts lying vacant. This issue is not isolated, as only nine out of the city’s 33 police stations are staffed at or near their approved levels. The shortage places excessive burdens on existing personnel and compromises efforts to maintain law and order effectively, according to a retired police official.

The information about these vacancies was revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Adv Rohit Badana with the City Police. The RTI disclosed that the 33 police stations in Nagpur collectively have 4,053 sanctioned posts, a number that has remained largely unchanged for decades. However, with the city’s expanding population and jurisdictional adjustments, there is a pressing need for a reassessment of manpower requirements.

Recent years have seen the establishment of new police stations, such as Mankapur and Kapil Nagar, which have reshaped operational boundaries. Despite this, many stations like Hingna, which covers a vast jurisdiction from Waddhamana on Amravati Road to Dongargaon on Wardha Road, operate with only 53 sanctioned employees, far below the necessary number to meet the demands of their areas.

Efforts by the government to resume recruitment have so far been insufficient to address these critical shortages, highlighting an urgent need for more effective measures to ensure adequate staffing levels across Nagpur’s police force.
