Tension grips Nagpur’s Nandanvan as young woman killed in road accident

Protestors brought the woman’s body to the spot after the post-mortem bringing the vehicular traffic to a grinding halt

Nagpur: Tension ran high at Jai Bhim Chowk in the Nandanvan area of Nagpur on Thursday afternoon when hundreds of residents and relatives of a woman who was killed in a road mishap, gathered at the accident site and staged a demonstration. The protestors, demanding compensation for the next of kin of the deceased, brought the woman’s body to the spot after the post-mortem bringing the vehicular traffic to a grinding halt.

Led by Duneshwar Pethe, the City Unit President of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), the agitators, staging a sit-in protest with the deceased’s body, also demanded the immediate arrest of the driver of the Eicher mini truck responsible for the tragic incident.

Dolly Borkar (35), a resident of Plot No 16, Pawanshakti Nagar, Bhilgaon Road, Wathoda, was riding pillion on her husband Rajesh Borkar’s Honda Activa (MH-49/BW1749) around 11.45 am on Wednesday. Dolly’s two-year old son Harsh was also with her on the scooter. On the road connecting Bhim Chowk and KDKT-point, a speeding Eicher mini truck (MH-49/BZ-2472) hit them while overtaking their scooter. The Borkar couple and their son fell off the scooter and suffered serious injuries. The mini truck driver sped away fearing public violence.

Bystanders and passers-by rushed the injured couple and Harsh to Anandam Hospital at Shrikrishna Nagar where Dolly succumbed to her injuries during treatment. After recording the statement of the deceased’s injured husband Rajesh, Nandanvan Police registered a case of hit-and-run under Sections 106(1), 281 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, read with Sections 134,177, 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, against the mini truck driver.

After the post-mortem at Government Medical College & Hospital, police handed over Dolly’s body to her family members. They along with other residents and activists of Nationalist Congress Party led by Duneshwar Pethe brought the body to the accident spot and staged demonstrations. The protestors expressed their grief and anger, calling for justice and swift action from the authorities to address their demands.

Later, staff from Nandanvan Police arrived at the spot and detained the protestors. The relatives and family members of the deceased then took the body for the last rites.
