Nagpur: A low pressure area formed over Bay of Bengal would see heavy to very heavy rains over the next week in Nagpur and entire Vidarbha as monsoon is set to become more vigorous. As was predicted that this year La Nina effect would result in extreme rainfall and the same would come true during the month of September.
As per warning issued by the Nagpur Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), over next seven days a fairly widespread area in the region would witness heavy downpour that may disrupt normal life. Already in the month of August, the precipitation is in excess of average and it has caused multiple problems apart from disrupting normal life and from economic losses. The heavy rains warning during this time of year when the crop cycle is midway to harvest ahead next month may hit the average production hard.
Typically the South West monsoon moves into the withdrawal phase during September and during that time, some of the days witness heavy rains. However this year, the extreme rains that used to occur once in a while in some corners are becoming a regular phenomenon posing challenges in urban areas that are getting flooded like never before.
Heavy rains in Nagpur district:
Already at many places, the downpour of the entire month was witnessed in a single day. On Friday also, various parts of Vidarbha were lashed by rains. Nagpur too saw moderate to heavy rains that were scattered in different parts with varying figures of downpour. While the middle parts of the city experienced heavy downpour, on the outskirts the rains were light in nature. The rains as usual led to formation of puddles on various city roads due to faulty drainage plan and increased height of cement roads.
The situation does not seem rosy from a health point of view as the puddles might lead to rise in breeding of mosquitoes. Already many people have suffered from chikungunya, the number of patients this year are on a higher side. To make matters worse, the already crumbling road network was further battered by the high intensity downpour on Friday. Particularly the tar roads have bore the brunt of rains and the pothole filling drive of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has come to naught.
