Nagpur– The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MOEFCC) has approved the environmental clearance for two new 660 MW coal-based supercritical thermal power units at the Koradi Power Plant, run by Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd (MAHAGENCO). The project will add a total of 1,320 MW to the city’s power generation capacity, raising alarm among environmental activists and concerned citizens.
Nagpur’s current power demand stands at around 500 MW, while its existing power stations already generate 5,850 MW. The addition of the new units could exacerbate pollution levels in a city already classified as “non-attainment” due to its failure to meet air quality standards.
Local authorities and environmental groups are calling for immediate action to address the potential environmental impacts on Nagpur’s already strained ecosystem.
