Nagpur: A hospital in Nagpur witnessed an unusual kidney transplant where a man donated his kidney to himself. The instance is medically termed as Kidney Auto Transplant. This may not be the first such case in Nagpur but the doctors’ fraternity said the city reported such a case after 30 years.
A 23-year old young engineering student reached Viveka Hospital with complaints of passing red coloured urine (blood in urine) off and on for the last one year. He had swelling in his left scrotum (Left Varicocele).

According to Dr Suhas Salpekar, noted Urologist attached to Viveka Hospital, the scrotum is a part of skin that holds and protects the testicles, and helps them maintain temperature cooler than the rest of the body. A varicocele is a swelling in the scrotum caused by a collection of dilated veins in the spermatic cord. This condition is more common on the left side of the scrotum, the doctor said.
Dr Salpekar narrated that this young engineer was initially investigated in Wardha and was found to have a birth defect called ‘Nutcracker Syndrome’ wherein his left renal vein was compressed between Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) and Abdominal Aorta (AA) causing increased blood pressure in left kidney (Left Renal Venous Hypertension). He was further investigated at Viveka Hospital with MRI and CT Angiogram to confirm the diagnosis.
All the tests of the patient confirmed that he needed a small procedure as per which, the kidney of the left side was to be translocated on the other side. He underwent left donor nephrectomy (left kidney with its blood vessels and ureter was removed). The kidney was successfully transplanted to the same patient but at a different place also called Kidney AutoTransplant.
Dr Suhas Salpekar, a Senior Renal Transplant Surgeon, carried out the surgery along with Urologist Dr Chaitanya Deshmukh and Dr Ved Mahajan. The team involved in attending the patient also included Dr K Jaiprasanna (CVTS Surgeon) and Anaesthetists Dr Neelesh Mathankar and Dr Arihant Jain and Nephrologist Dr Pranav Jha.
