According to the report, the jump trick is a method used by some petrol pumps to dispense less fuel than what is paid for, by manipulating the fuel meter. Here’s how it works:
• When you start refuelling, the fuel meter should gradually increase as the fuel is dispensed. However, in the jump trick, the meter jumps suddenly from zero to a higher value– such as Rs 10, Rs 20, or more– without showing the actual gradual increase.
• This makes it appear as if more fuel is being pumped than what is actually delivered, allowing the station to charge you more for less fuel.
What to watch for:
• Under normal conditions, the meter may jump slightly, but this jump should not exceed Rs 4-5. Any significant jump, such as directly going to Rs 20 or more, is a red flag.
• Watch the fuel meter closely as soon as the refuelling starts. If you see the reading jumping excessively, immediately question the staff about the reading and ask them to reset the machine and restart the process.
To avoid being scammed by the jump trick, follow these tips:
1. Always check that the meter is set to zero before refuelling begins.
2. Closely monitor the meter during refuelling, especially in the first few seconds.
3. If you notice a significant jump in the reading, ask the operator to stop and reset the machine.
4. If you continue to have doubts about the accuracy of the pump, you can report the petrol station to local authorities or consumer protection agencies.
