NMC honours its sanitation workers for keeping Nagpur clean, healthy

Nagpur: In a remarkable initiative, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) honoured its sanitation workers through a unique programme titled ‘Man Ki Safai,’ aimed at promoting mental well-being and providing a platform for entertainment. The event, held on Tuesday, celebrated the unsung heroes of Nagpur, acknowledging their tireless efforts in keeping the city clean and healthy.

The sanitation workers took centre stage, showcasing their hidden talents by performing Bollywood songs, playing musical instruments, and demonstrating their singing skills. Saroj Samudre, 55, one of the workers, shared her excitement, saying, “I was thrilled when my supervisor informed me about this special entertainment event for us.”

Dhiraj Rao, 32, a door-to-door garbage collector, expressed how the NMC’s new waste segregation rule has significantly eased his job. “NMC has also provided us with safety gear like gloves and head caps, which helps protect our health,” he added.

NMC officials also extended their appreciation for the dedication of these workers. NMC Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari stated, “This programme is designed for their well-being, and we have discovered talented individuals among them.”

The event also included a meditation camp to promote mental wellness, and standout performers were felicitated, making it a fitting tribute to the city’s sanitation workforce.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Gajendra Mahalle highlighted the improvements in waste management, noting that around 400 vehicles are now collecting segregated waste from households across the city. Additional Commissioner Anchal Goyal praised the workers for their invaluable contributions, likening their role to that of doctors and engineers in serving society.
