Nagpur: Elections are the grand celebration of democracy, where every individual has the right to vote. It is also the responsibility of every citizen to exercise this right. To emphasize this and raise voter awareness, various initiatives will be implemented at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation headquarters and across all ten city zones, as directed by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary, on Wednesday (Oct 23).
In preparation for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024, Dr. Chaudhary reviewed the readiness of initiatives under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program, which will be executed by the Municipal Corporation.
During a meeting held at the commissioner’s chamber, attended by Additional Commissioner and SVEEP Nodal Officer Mr. Ajay Charthankar, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ranjana Lade, and other senior officials, Dr. Chaudhary instructed that all officers work in coordination. He emphasized the need for well-planned initiatives in all ten zones to raise voter awareness. The Commissioner suggested creating a schedule for these activities and focusing efforts on areas that saw low voter turnout in previous elections to improve participation rates.
He also recommended several creative outreach methods, such as displaying awareness banners in prominent locations, organizing flash mobs, street plays, and competitions to engage the youth, and setting up awareness activities in malls, hospitals, markets, and colleges. Additionally, activities like bike rallies and morning marches should be organized in various parts of the city to celebrate the “Festival of Voting.”
Dr. Chaudhary further instructed the team to appeal to citizens across all assembly constituencies to maximize voter turnout. Campaigns should target hotels, societies, and high-rise buildings, encouraging residents to vote. Citizens should also be encouraged to sign voter pledge forms at colleges and schools, and audio-visual messages should be played from garbage collection vehicles to spread awareness about the importance of voting.
The meeting began with a briefing from Additional Commissioner Mr. Ajay Charthankar, who shared information about the SVEEP program and its success in urban areas of Nagpur.
