Nagpur: The rising traffic violations have put the Second Capital of Maharashtra under scrutiny. With vehicle numbers surging and limited parking space, illegal parking incidents are increasingly clogging roads. As Diwali approaches and residents flock to marketplaces, the situation has further deteriorated.
From January 1 to October 22, Nagpur traffic police issued 78,521 challans for illegal parking — an average of 266 daily — under Sections 122/177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. These violations have led to frequent traffic jams and slowdowns citywide. With 70 days left in the year, this figure is expected to exceed the 88,187 violations recorded in 2023, the data revealed.
A closer look at the data showed that among Nagpur’s ten traffic zones, Sitabuldi, a bustling commercial hub, tops the list with 22,305 parking violations. Roads in this area are often jammed due to careless parking, especially on turnings, causing severe disruptions in traffic flow. Cotton Market and Sonegaon also face major challenges, with 11,922 and 9,637 cases, respectively, where parked vehicles obstruct critical routes and create congestion.
Major roads, including Residency Road, Central Avenue, Cotton Market Road, Itwari, Gandhibagh, West High Court Road, and East High Court Road, are significantly impacted by illegal parking, particularly on turns, leading to bottlenecks and frequent gridlock. In response, Nagpur traffic police, under Deputy Commissioner Archit Chandak, have initiated a special drive targeting these high-risk parking spots to curb the issue.
The problem extends into residential areas like Ramdaspeth, Dharampeth, Gokulpeth, Sakkardara, and Ravi Nagar, where commercial establishments in converted residential buildings lack proper visitor parking. The narrow lanes in these localities are often blocked, worsening congestion and leaving commuters stranded in slow-moving traffic.
