New Delhi/Nagpur: The Left alliance on Saturday swept all the four seats in Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union elections.

The elections that took place on Friday saw a good voter turnout of 60 per cent, significantly higher than the last two years. More than 5,000 votes were polled. Regarding the outcome of the elections, outgoing JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar had earlier said, “There will be tough competition between the BAPSA and Left, especially for president. But one thing is certain, the ABVP is nowhere in the picture this time.”

The JNUSU polls are being widely watched owing largely to the nationalism debate triggered by an event held on February 9 to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Azfal Guru. Alleged anti-national slogans were raised at the event and this led to the arrest of three students, including Kumar. Two other leaders, Umar Khalid and Anirban, were also arrested to be later released on bail. Kanhaiya’s AISF is not in the fray this time.
